Roots Operation Manager

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Roots Operations Manager to join our team, leading the growing of KPL invested Carrot crops from land selection through to delivery into KPL Orkie and will oversee full responsibility for Carrot and Parsnip agronomy across the grower base, along with key responsibilities within roots harvesting.  Leading by example and a role model for the business with growers, customers and other suppliers, the ideal candidate should possess practical experience of root crop production, excellent decision making and communication skills as well as having strong organisational skills. A full UK driving licence is essential, BASIS and FACTS qualifications are preferred, however training will be provided to the right candidate.

In this role, the main responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing the growing of 300 acres of KPL Carrots in Perthshire and Angus & a joint venture of growing 280 acres of Carrots in the Black Isle, Morayshire & Aberdeenshire mainly for late season carrot production.
  • Securing suitable rented land for KPL cropping & liaising with landlords.
  • The coordination of contractors from field cultivations through to straw laying operations.
  • Monitor crops under your control and advise on all aspects of crop production including timely applications of agrochemical and fertiliser inputs.
  • Budget responsibility for KPL Carrot growing including new equipment purchasing, maintenance & operational improvement.
  • Lead and manage the KPL Roots agronomy team to ensure cropping area is secured and crops are produced to the required specifications to achieve budgeted volumes, while complying with current legislation, assurance schemes and relevant KPL customer protocols.
  • Maintain appropriate pesticide and cropping records in the Muddy Boots system for all crops under your control & ensure PPPL’s are updated.
  • Communicate crop development to colleagues as necessary & provide crop updates for board and customer crop reports.
  • Monitor harvesting operations including haulage, identifying operational improvements to improve efficiencies and reduce cost.
  • Assist the Head of Field in their duties, taking responsibility for the Field Department in their absence.
  • Support the wider business on agricultural communications & data requests from customers.
